How to Factory Reset Your Samsung Phone Before Selling
Samsung has its own version of activation lock โ called Factory Reset Protection, or FRP. If you don't remove your Google and Samsung accounts properly before resetting, the next owner will hit a wall after the reset and the phone becomes unsellable. Here's the right order to do everything, plus what to back up first.
Why factory reset matters when selling Samsung
Two separate accounts can lock a Samsung device after reset:
- Google account (FRP): if a Google account was signed in before the reset, Samsung will demand those exact credentials on the next setup. No credentials = phone unusable.
- Samsung account: ties services like Samsung Pay, SmartThings, Galaxy Store purchases, and Find My Mobile to your identity. Leaving this signed in lets the next owner accidentally access your accounts โ and you keep getting their notifications.
Removing both accounts BEFORE the reset prevents lockout entirely. It's a 10-minute process if done in the right order.
What to back up before resetting
Once you reset, the data is gone from the device. Decide what you want to keep and back it up first:
- Samsung Cloud / Samsung Account backup: Settings โ Accounts and backup โ Back up data (Samsung Cloud). This backs up calls, messages, settings, and apps.
- Google Drive backup: Settings โ Accounts and backup โ Back up data (Google Drive). Photos sync via Google Photos. Contacts sync via your Google account.
- Smart Switch: if moving to another Samsung phone, install Smart Switch on both devices and transfer directly โ fast and comprehensive.
- Manual file backup:Connect the phone to a computer via USB cable, switch USB mode to "Transfer files," and copy out anything in Internal Storage you want to keep (photos, documents, videos).
Backup first. Reset later. Don't flip the order โ it's the #1 mistake we see.
Step 1: Remove your Google account
This is the most important step. Removing the Google account before reset turns off FRP for the next owner.
- Open Settings
- Tap Accounts and backup
- Tap Manage accounts
- Tap your Google account
- Tap Remove account at the bottom
- Confirm by tapping Remove account again
If you have multiple Google accounts (work, personal), remove all of them.
Step 2: Remove your Samsung account
- Still in Settings
- Tap Samsung account at the top (your name)
- Scroll to the bottom
- Tap Sign out
- Enter your Samsung account password to confirm
Step 3: Sign out of Samsung Pay / Samsung Wallet
Samsung Pay holds card information separately from the Samsung account. Remove cards before the reset:
- Open the Samsung Wallet (or Samsung Pay) app
- Tap each card
- Tap the menu (three dots) โ Delete card
- Repeat for all stored cards
This is important โ leftover payment credentials in Samsung Wallet can cause issues for both you and the next owner.
Step 4: Disconnect Galaxy Wearables (Watch, Buds)
If you have a Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds paired, unpair them before resetting the phone. This way, you can re-pair them to your new phone without issues.
- Open the Galaxy Wearable app
- Tap the menu (three lines)
- Tap Disconnect next to your watch/buds
Step 5: Perform the factory reset
Now everything is detached from accounts, you're safe to reset.
- Open Settings
- Tap General management
- Tap Reset
- Tap Factory data reset
- Scroll down and tap Reset
- Enter your phone lock screen PIN/pattern
- Confirm by tapping Delete all
The phone restarts and begins erasing. Don't turn it off during this process โ it can take 5โ10 minutes. When it finishes, you'll see the Samsung welcome screen.
Verifying the reset worked (FRP check)
After the reset completes, the phone boots up to the language and welcome screen. To verify FRP is OFF:
- Tap through the setup until you reach Wi-Fi connection
- Connect to a Wi-Fi network
- If FRP is OFF: the next screen asks you to set up as new (no Google account demand)
- If FRP is ON:the screen asks for "a Google account previously synced on this device" โ that means Step 1 was missed
If FRP is ON, sign in with your old Google account to clear it, then sign out and finish setup, or do a fresh factory reset and retry from Step 1.
What to hand over with the phone

WhatsApp Berry NiceFrequently asked questions
What is Factory Reset Protection (FRP)?+
FRP is Samsung's anti-theft system, identical in purpose to Apple's Activation Lock. After a factory reset, if a Google account was previously signed in, the phone demands that same Google account credentials before it can be set up. Without those credentials, the phone is locked. Always remove your Google account BEFORE resetting.
Will factory reset remove apps I paid for?+
It removes apps from the device, but your purchases are tied to your Google account โ so you can redownload them on any phone signed in to the same account. The reset doesn't affect your Google Play library. If you're moving to a new Android device, your purchase history travels with your account.
How long does Samsung factory reset take?+
Usually 5โ10 minutes for the reset itself, plus 3โ5 minutes for the phone to reboot and reach the setup welcome screen. Larger storage models (256GB+) can take longer. Make sure the battery is above 50% before starting.
Should I encrypt my phone before resetting?+
Modern Samsung phones (Galaxy S10 and newer, running Android 10+) are encrypted by default. You don't need to do anything extra. For older devices, you can enable encryption in Settings โ Lock Screen and Security โ Encrypt Phone before the reset for added safety, though factory reset alone is sufficient for most cases.
What if my Samsung account password is forgotten?+
Reset it before the factory reset, not after. Visit account.samsung.com on any browser, click 'Forgot ID or password,' and follow the verification steps. The same applies to Google โ visit accounts.google.com to reset that one. Doing this BEFORE the factory reset is much easier than after.
