How to Check if Your iPhone is Telco-Locked Before Selling

Planning to sell your iPhone? One of the first things a buyback service will ask is whether your device is telco-locked or unlocked. A locked iPhone is tied to a specific carrier, which limits who can use it โ€” and that directly affects the offer you get. There are also worse situations: phones showing "No Service" due to unpaid bills, or iPhones with Remote Management (MDM) profiles installed by the carrier. Here's how to check everything before you make the trip.

Method 1: Check in Settings (easiest)

This is the fastest way and works on iOS 14 and later.

  • Open Settings on your iPhone
  • Tap General
  • Tap About
  • Scroll down and look for Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock

If it says No SIM restrictions, your iPhone is unlocked. If it says SIM locked or shows a carrier name with restrictions, the device is telco-locked.

Method 2: Try a different SIM card

If you have access to a SIM card from a different carrier, this is a definitive test.

  • Turn off your iPhone
  • Remove your current SIM card
  • Insert a SIM from a different carrier (e.g., if you use Maxis, try a Digi SIM)
  • Turn the phone back on

If the phone connects to the new carrier's network and you can make calls, it's unlocked. If you see "SIM Not Valid," "SIM Not Supported," or an activation error, the phone is locked.

Warning sign: "No Service"

If your iPhone shows "No Service" in the top corner where the carrier name should be, this is a red flag. In Malaysia, this often happens when an iPhone was purchased on a carrier contract (Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile) and the bills have not been fully paid.

When bills go unpaid, the carrier may blacklist the device's IMEI number, which disables cellular service entirely. This is worse than a simple telco lock โ€” a locked phone still works on its original carrier, but a blacklisted phone shows "No Service" on any carrier.

If your phone shows "No Service", contact your carrier first. Settle any outstanding bills and ask them to remove the IMEI from the blacklist. Only then can the phone be properly sold.

Even worse: Remote Management (MDM)

Some iPhones bought on carrier contracts or through corporate programs have a Remote Management profile (also called MDM โ€” Mobile Device Management) installed. This is even more serious than a telco lock.

To check if your iPhone has Remote Management:

  • Go to Settings โ†’ General โ†’ VPN & Device Management
  • If you see a management profile listed (from a carrier or company), the device has MDM
  • If this section is empty or doesn't exist, you're fine

Why is this worse? Because the carrier or company that installed the MDM profile can remotely lock, wipe, or restrict the device at any time โ€” even after you sell it. A buyer who gets a device with active MDM could have it locked on them without warning.

If your iPhone has a Remote Management profile, contact the carrier or company that installed it and ask them to remove it before selling. If they refuse or cannot remove it, mention this when you WhatsApp Berry Nice โ€” we evaluate MDM devices case by case, but the offer will be significantly affected.

Why does telco lock matter for buyback?

When we buy your iPhone to resell, a locked device can only be sold to someone on that specific carrier. An unlocked iPhone can be used with any carrier worldwide, making it much more valuable on the resale market.

The impact on your quote, from best to worst:

  • Unlocked โ€” best offer, full resale flexibility
  • Telco-locked (bills paid) โ€” accepted at adjusted price, model by model
  • "No Service" (unpaid bills / blacklisted) โ€” needs resolution with carrier first
  • Remote Management (MDM) โ€” case by case, significant deduction or may not be accepted

How to get your iPhone unlocked

If your iPhone is locked and you want a better offer:

  • Contact your carrier (Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile)
  • Confirm your contract is completed and all bills are paid
  • Request a network unlock โ€” usually free once terms are fulfilled
  • The unlock may take 24-72 hours to process
  • Once confirmed, restart your iPhone and verify using Method 1 above

What to tell Berry Nice when you WhatsApp

When you message us for a quote, mention your lock status upfront: model, storage, condition, battery health, and whether it's unlocked, telco-locked (which carrier), showing "No Service," or has Remote Management. This helps us give you an accurate estimate without surprises at inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Does Berry Nice buy telco-locked iPhones?+

Yes โ€” we accept telco-locked iPhones on a model-by-model basis at an adjusted price. The adjustment reflects the reduced resale flexibility. WhatsApp us your model and carrier for a specific quote.

Does Berry Nice buy iPhones showing "No Service"?+

If the "No Service" is because of unpaid carrier bills, this is a problem โ€” the carrier has blacklisted the IMEI. We need to check each case individually. WhatsApp us with the details and we'll advise.

Does Berry Nice buy iPhones with Remote Management?+

This is difficult. Remote Management (MDM) means the carrier or company can remotely lock the device at any time. We evaluate these on a case-by-case basis, but the offer is significantly lower if the MDM cannot be removed. In some cases we cannot buy the device at all.

Can I unlock my iPhone before selling?+

Yes โ€” contact your carrier (Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile, etc.) and request an unlock. Your contract must be completed and any outstanding payments settled. An unlocked iPhone fetches a better buyback price.

What about telco-locked Samsung or Android?+

We do not buy telco-locked Samsung or Android devices at all. This adjusted-price policy only applies to iPhones.

My contract is paid off but the phone is still locked. Why?+

Paying off the contract doesn't always automatically unlock the phone. You need to contact the carrier and explicitly request an unlock. Then verify using the steps in this guide.
