eSIM vs Physical SIM: How It Affects Your iPhone's Buyback Value in Malaysia

The short version

In Malaysia and most of Southeast Asia, mobile plans still rely heavily on physical SIM cards. An iPhone with a SIM tray can accept any local SIM — Maxis, Digi, Celcom, U Mobile — with zero friction. An eSIM-only iPhone requires the carrier to support eSIM activation, which not all Malaysian plans do seamlessly, and some prepaid plans do not support at all.

This means eSIM-only iPhones have a smaller pool of potential buyers when we resell them. Smaller buyer pool means lower resale price, which means a lower buyback offer to you.

Which iPhones are eSIM-only?

Apple started selling eSIM-only iPhones with the iPhone 14 series — but only in the United States. US-market iPhone 14, 14 Pro, 15, 15 Pro, 16, 16 Pro, and 17 series models have no SIM tray.

Malaysian-market iPhones (purchased from authorized Apple resellers, Machines, Switch, or carriers in Malaysia) still include a physical SIM tray. However, US-import and grey-market eSIM-only units are common in the Malaysian secondhand market.

How much difference does it make?

The exact difference varies by model and current market conditions. As a general guide, eSIM-only models tend to fetch a noticeably lower offer compared to the same model with a SIM slot. The gap is bigger for older models (where resale demand is already lower) and smaller for the latest flagships (where demand is high regardless).

How to check your iPhone's SIM type

• Look at the left side of your iPhone — is there a small SIM tray slot?
• Go to Settings → General → About and look at your SIM information
• If you bought it in Malaysia from an authorized retailer, it almost certainly has a SIM tray
• If you bought it in the US or imported, check for the tray — US iPhone 14 onwards are eSIM-only

What this means for you as a seller

If your iPhone has a physical SIM slot, great — you are in the majority in Malaysia and your buyback value is not affected by this factor. If your iPhone is eSIM-only, it is still very much sellable, and Berry Nice buys them.
