How to Check Windows Laptop Battery Health Before Selling

Windows does not show a battery health percentage in Settings the way an iPhone does, but it can generate a full battery report in under two minutes. That report tells you how much capacity your battery has lost, and it is one of the first things a buyer checks on a used laptop. Here is how to run it, how to read it, and what it means for your buyback quote.

Why battery health matters on a used laptop

A laptop battery is a consumable part. After a few years of daily use it holds less charge, and the laptop that once ran all day may now need a plug within a couple of hours. Buyers know this, so battery condition is part of how a used laptop is graded. Knowing your number before you sell means no surprises at the quote.

Step 1: Generate the Windows battery report

This works on Windows 10 and Windows 11:

  1. Right-click the Start button and open Terminal, Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.
  2. Type powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
  3. Windows saves an HTML file and prints its location, usually in your user folder as battery-report.html.
  4. Open that file in Chrome, Edge or any browser.

Run it while the laptop is on battery or plugged in, either works. The report covers the whole life of the battery, not just today.

Step 2: Read the two numbers that matter

Near the top of the report, under Installed batteries, look for:

  • Design capacity: what the battery could hold when it was new.
  • Full charge capacity: what it can hold now.
  • Cycle count: shown on many laptops. More cycles generally means more wear.

Divide full charge capacity by design capacity. If the design capacity is 50,000 mWh and the full charge capacity is 40,000 mWh, the battery holds about 80 percent of its original capacity. A small drop is normal. A large drop means short runtime, and a buyer will price that in.

Step 3: Check the battery usage and recent history

Scroll to the Battery usage and Battery capacity history sections. A steady, gradual decline is normal. A sudden fall in full charge capacity, or a laptop that shuts down at 30 or 40 percent, suggests a failing cell.

Step 4: Do a simple real-world check

  1. Charge to 100 percent.
  2. Unplug and use it normally for 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Note how much the percentage drops. A fast drop on light use points to a tired battery even before you read the report.

Warning signs that are not just wear

  • Swollen battery: the base will not sit flat, the trackpad clicks oddly or the case is bulging. Stop charging it and get it checked.
  • Laptop only works when plugged in: the battery is effectively dead.
  • Windows says "Consider replacing your battery": Windows has flagged significant wear.

What this means for your buyback quote

Battery condition is one of several factors, alongside screen, specs, age, keyboard, ports and cosmetics. A laptop with strong specs and a tired battery can still fetch a fair price. If you are not sure whether it is worth replacing the battery first, you can get a laptop buyback quote with the battery as it is and compare. Frequently asked questions

Is there a battery health percentage in Windows Settings?+

Not on most laptops. Settings shows the current charge level and battery usage, but not wear. The built-in battery report (generated with powercfg) is the reliable way to see design capacity versus the capacity the battery can hold today. Some brands, such as Lenovo, Dell and ASUS, also include a battery health tool in their own utility app.

What battery wear level is normal for a used laptop?+

Every lithium battery loses capacity with use, so some wear is expected on a laptop that is a few years old. As a rough guide, a full charge capacity at around 80 percent or more of design capacity is generally treated as healthy, while a much lower figure means noticeably shorter runtime. Exact thresholds vary by buyer, so treat this as a guide, not a rule.

Will a weak battery make my laptop unsellable?+

No. A worn battery lowers the value, but a laptop with a weak battery can still be bought if it powers on and works properly. A swollen battery is a different matter. If the case is bulging or the trackpad is lifting, stop using it and charging it, because it is a safety issue.

Should I replace the battery before selling?+

Usually only if the replacement costs clearly less than the value it adds. For many laptops the price difference in a buyback quote is smaller than a genuine battery replacement plus labour. Get a quote first with the battery as it is, then decide. Third-party batteries may also be treated differently from original ones.

Does charging to 100 percent before the inspection help?+

It helps the laptop start up and be tested properly, but it does not change the battery wear. Bring the original charger too, because a missing or non-original charger can affect the quote.
