How to Check Your Phone's IMEI Before Selling in Malaysia

Every phone has a 15-digit serial number called an IMEI. Buyers check it, shops check it, and telcos use it to block stolen or unpaid devices. If your IMEI is flagged, the phone can look and work perfectly and still be worth nothing on the resale market. Here is how to find yours, what to check, and what to do if something looks off.

Why the IMEI matters more than the condition

Scratches, a tired battery, or a missing box all reduce a quote. An IMEI problem is different, it can remove the value entirely. A phone with a blocked IMEI cannot connect to any Malaysian network, so nobody can use it as a phone, and no legitimate shop can resell it.

That is why an IMEI check is one of the first things done at inspection. Doing it yourself first takes under a minute and tells you whether you are dealing with a normal sale or a problem device.

How to find your IMEI

There are four reliable ways, in order of speed:

  1. Dial *#06# on the phone keypad. The IMEI appears immediately, no call needed. This works on iPhone and every Android brand. Dual-SIM phones show IMEI1 and IMEI2, and eSIM models may also show an EID.
  2. iPhone:Settings → General → About, then scroll to IMEI. Press and hold to copy it.
  3. Android:Settings → About phone → Status or IMEI information. On Samsung it sits under About phone → Status information.
  4. Off the device: the original box label, the SIM tray, the back housing engraving, or the purchase invoice. Use this when the phone will not power on.

Write the number down exactly. One wrong digit gives you a result for somebody else's phone.

What to check once you have the number

  • It matches the phone. Compare the IMEI shown by *#06# with the one on the SIM tray or box. A mismatch usually means the mainboard was replaced, which affects value and needs to be declared.
  • Blacklist or block status. Free IMEI checkers online will report whether a device has been reported lost, stolen, or blocked. Results vary in quality, so treat them as an early warning rather than a final answer.
  • Telco or contract status. If the phone was bought on a plan, contact the telco with the IMEI and confirm the account is settled. An unpaid contract is the most common reason a working phone suddenly gets blocked months after it was sold.
  • Model and specs match the listing. The IMEI also confirms the exact model and storage, useful if you are unsure whether you have a Pro or a Pro Max, or 128GB versus 256GB.
  • iPhone owners: confirm Activation Lock is off before selling. iCloud-locked iPhones are an absolute no, regardless of IMEI status. See our iCloud removal guide.

What we can and cannot accept

Being direct about this saves everyone time:

  • Clean IMEI, any major brand: accepted. iPhone, Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, Huawei, and OnePlus.
  • Blacklisted or network-blocked IMEI: not accepted.
  • iCloud-locked or MDM-locked iPhone: not accepted, even with a clean IMEI.
  • Telco or contract iPhone that works with any SIM: accepted, though we will ask about the contract status.
  • Carrier-locked Android: not accepted.
  • Replaced mainboard or mismatched IMEI: case by case, and it lowers the offer.

If your IMEI is clean and you want a number before travelling, WhatsApp us your model, storage, and condition and we will send an estimate. You can start from the sell your used phone page, which lists every brand and category we buy.

If the check comes back bad

  1. Do not try to sell it as normal. Selling a blocked or stolen device knowingly creates a legal problem for you, not just for the buyer.
  2. Find out who blocked it. If you bought the phone second-hand, go back to the seller. If it is on a plan, call the telco.
  3. Settle the account if the block is contract-related. Once the telco lifts the block, the phone becomes sellable again.
  4. Keep the paperwork. An invoice, a telco settlement letter, or a clearance reference makes the next sale straightforward.

Before you come in

Have these ready and the inspection moves quickly:

  • IMEI checked and matching the device
  • iCloud, Google, Samsung, or Mi account signed out
  • Phone charged above 50% so battery health can be read
  • Original box and charger if you still have them
  • Your IC for the payout record

Inspections usually take 15–30 minutes and payment is instant via DuitNow or bank transfer once the offer is accepted.

Frequently asked questions

What is an IMEI number?+

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipment Identity. It is a 15-digit number unique to your phone hardware, separate from your SIM or phone number. Networks use it to identify a specific handset, which is how a device can be blocked across all telcos even after the SIM is removed. Dual-SIM phones normally have two IMEIs.

How do I find my IMEI without turning on the phone?+

Look at the original box, the printed label usually shows the IMEI and serial number. On many phones the IMEI is also laser-etched on the SIM tray or the back housing. If you still have the purchase receipt or invoice, the IMEI is often printed there too. This is useful when the screen is broken or the phone will not boot.

What does a blacklisted IMEI mean?+

It means the IMEI has been reported to the network as lost, stolen, or tied to an unpaid contract, so telcos block it from connecting to mobile networks. The phone may still work on Wi-Fi, but it cannot make calls or use mobile data in the country that blocked it. Blacklisted devices are not something we can buy.

Can a blacklist be removed?+

Only by the party that requested it. If a phone was blocked because of an outstanding telco contract, settling the account with that telco is the route to having the block lifted, and it must be done by the account holder. If the device was reported stolen by someone else, there is no legitimate way to clear it. Anyone offering to unblock an IMEI for a fee should be treated with suspicion.

Do you check the IMEI when buying my phone?+

Yes. IMEI and lock status are part of every inspection, together with model, storage, battery health, and physical condition. Checking it yourself before you come in simply avoids a wasted trip and lets us give you an accurate estimate over WhatsApp first.
