How to Remove iCloud Before Selling Your iPhone โ€” Complete Guide

If you sell an iPhone with iCloud still active, the buyer can't use it โ€” and you might still receive notifications, messages, or photos on a device you no longer own. Worse, the iPhone may end up activation-locked and unsellable. This guide walks you through the right order to sign out, what to back up first, and what to do if you forgot your Apple ID password.

Why iCloud must be removed before selling

Apple uses iCloud and Find My iPhone as the foundation of its anti-theft system. When a device is signed in to your Apple ID and Find My is on, the iPhone is permanently tied to your account โ€” only you can approve a new setup.

This is great for security, but it creates three problems when selling:

  • The next owner cannot set up the device after factory reset
  • Your personal data (photos, contacts, messages) can keep syncing to a device you no longer own
  • If iCloud is still on at the point of inspection, our offer will reflect a much lower tier โ€” or we may decline the device entirely

Removing iCloud properly takes about 5 minutes. Doing it in the right order saves you a lot of friction.

Before you start: back up your data first

Once you erase your iPhone, the data is gone from the device. If you want to transfer photos, messages, contacts, or app data to a new phone, back up first.

Two ways to back up:

  1. iCloud backup:Settings โ†’ tap your Apple ID at the top โ†’ iCloud โ†’ iCloud Backup โ†’ Back Up Now. Make sure you're on Wi-Fi and the backup completes before you sign out.
  2. Computer backup:Connect your iPhone to a Mac (Finder) or PC (Apple Devices app or iTunes), select the device, and click "Back Up Now." This stores everything locally.

Tip: if you're moving to a new iPhone, also turn on Quick Start on the new device โ€” it transfers everything wirelessly. But still do a backup first as a safety net.

Step 1: Sign out of iMessage and FaceTime

Doing this first prevents the "why aren't my messages arriving?" problem after you move to a new device โ€” especially if the new device isn't an iPhone.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Messages โ†’ toggle iMessage off
  3. Go back to Settings โ†’ FaceTime โ†’ toggle off

Step 2: Turn off Find My iPhone

This is the critical step. Until Find My is off, the device is activation-locked.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your name/Apple ID at the top
  3. Tap Find My
  4. Tap Find My iPhone
  5. Toggle Find My iPhone OFF
  6. Enter your Apple ID password to confirm

After this, your iPhone is no longer locked to your Apple ID. Don't skip this step.

Step 3: Sign out of your Apple ID

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your name/Apple ID at the top
  3. Scroll all the way down
  4. Tap Sign Out
  5. Enter your Apple ID password
  6. You'll be asked if you want to keep a copy of certain data (contacts, keychain, etc.) on the device โ€” choose what you prefer. We recommend tapping "Don't Keep on My iPhone" since you're selling.
  7. Tap Sign Out again to confirm

Step 4: Erase all content and settings

This wipes the device so it boots up to the "Hello" welcome screen, ready for the next owner to set up as new.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone
  4. Tap Erase All Content and Settings
  5. The device will summarize what will be removed โ€” review and tap Continue
  6. Enter your passcode if asked
  7. Confirm the erase

The device will restart and take a few minutes to fully wipe. When you see the "Hello" / "Slide to set up" screen, the iPhone is ready to sell.

What if you forgot your Apple ID password?

Don't skip the iCloud steps thinking you'll "just factory reset." A factory reset on a device with Find My still on will hit the Activation Lock screen and become unsellable.

If you forgot your password, reset it first:

  1. Visit iforgot.apple.com from any device
  2. Enter your Apple ID
  3. Verify via SMS, email, or trusted device
  4. Set a new password
  5. Come back to the iPhone and proceed with Step 2 above

If you no longer have access to the recovery options, contact Apple Support directly โ€” they have a recovery process. WhatsApp us before bringing the device in; we'll let you know if it's sellable in its current state.

What "iCloud Locked" means and how to avoid it

If a factory reset is performed while Find My is still on, the device boots into Activation Lock. The setup screen requires the original Apple ID and password to proceed. Without it, the device is unusable.

Avoid this entirely by doing Step 2 (turn off Find My iPhone) before Step 4 (erase). If you accidentally erased without signing out first, sign in at iCloud.com, go to Find iPhone, select the device, and tap Remove from Account.

After erasing: what your buyer sees

When we receive the device, our first check is the setup screen. A proper erase looks like:

  • Welcome / Hello animation in multiple languages
  • "Slide to set up" or language selection screen
  • No prompt for Apple ID password

If we see an Activation Lock screen asking for your Apple ID, we have to pause inspection until you remove it remotely. Smooth setup = smooth inspection. Most inspections are completed within 15โ€“30 minutes when the device is properly prepared, with payout via DuitNow or bank transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell an iPhone with iCloud still signed in?+

Technically yes, but it makes the device much less valuable. With Find My iPhone still on, the device is activation-locked โ€” the next owner cannot set it up until you remotely remove it. Most buyback services either refuse or significantly reduce the offer for iCloud-locked devices. Always sign out before selling.

What happens if I forget to remove iCloud?+

If you've already handed over the device, you can still remove it remotely. Sign in to iCloud.com from any browser, click Find iPhone, select the device, and tap 'Remove from Account'. Inform the buyer once it's done so they can complete setup.

How long does erasing an iPhone take?+

Usually 2โ€“5 minutes for the erase itself, plus another 1โ€“2 minutes for the iPhone to restart and show the 'Hello' welcome screen. Older devices (iPhone 8 and below) can take longer. Make sure the device has at least 50% battery before starting.

Will erasing remove my SIM card data?+

No โ€” physical SIM cards aren't affected by an iPhone erase. However, if you use an eSIM, it will be removed during the erase. Save your eSIM details with your carrier before erasing, or transfer the eSIM to your new device first.

Do I need to remove my Apple Watch pairing too?+

Yes, if you have a paired Apple Watch and plan to keep using it on a new iPhone. Unpair the Watch through the Watch app on your iPhone BEFORE erasing the iPhone โ€” this creates a backup of your Watch data that can be restored on the new iPhone.
