How to Prepare Your Apple Watch Before Selling — Complete Guide
Selling your Apple Watch? The preparation process is different from an iPhone or MacBook — unpair it from your iPhone first, and everything else follows. Here's exactly what to do so your Apple Watch is ready for a smooth inspection and fast payout.
Step 1: Unpair from your iPhone
This is the most important step — and unlike iPhone or MacBook, you do this from the Watch app on your iPhone, not from the watch itself.
- Open the Watch app on your paired iPhone
- Go to the My Watch tab
- Tap All Watches at the top
- Tap the (i) icon next to your watch
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch
- Confirm and enter your Apple ID password when prompted
Unpairing automatically creates a backup on your iPhone, signs out of iCloud, removes Activation Lock, and erases the watch. It does everything in one step.
Step 2: If you no longer have the paired iPhone
If you already sold or lost the iPhone that was paired to the watch, you can erase directly from the watch:
- On the watch, go to Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings
- Enter your passcode if prompted
Important: you also need to remove the watch from your iCloud account. Go to iCloud.com → Find My → All Devices → select the watch → Remove from Account. Without this step, Activation Lock stays on.
Step 3: Clean the watch
A clean device makes a better impression during inspection. Wipe the screen and back with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Clean the band if you're including it. Remove any case or screen protector — we need to see the actual condition underneath.
