How to Prepare Your Gaming Console Before Selling

A PS5, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox still holds solid resale value in Malaysia, but only if it leaves your hands clean. Sign out of your account without deactivating it and the next owner inherits your library and payment details, or worse, the console stays tied to you. Here is the right order to back up, deactivate, and reset each of the three main consoles, plus what to hand over for the best quote.

Before you start: back up your saves

A factory reset erases everything on the console's internal drive. Your game progress is the one thing you cannot get back if you skip this step, so sync it to the cloud first:

  • PlayStation:with PlayStation Plus, go to Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Saved Data → Upload to Cloud Storage.
  • Nintendo Switch:with Nintendo Switch Online, most games back up automatically, but confirm in System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud.
  • Xbox:saves sync to the cloud automatically when you're online and signed in. Let it finish syncing before you reset.

No subscription? You can copy saves to a USB drive on PlayStation and Xbox. On Switch, cloud saves need an active Online membership, so plan ahead if you want to keep progress.

PlayStation 5 / PS4

  1. Deactivate as your primary console.Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Console Sharing and Offline Play → Disable. This releases your digital library from the console.
  2. Sign out and remove your account, then run the reset: Settings → System → System Software → Reset Options → Reset Your Console. Choose the full reset, not just "Restore Default Settings."
  3. Forgot to deactivate?Sign in at the PlayStation website, go to your account's device settings, and deactivate all devices remotely (you can do this once every six months).

Nintendo Switch (incl. OLED and Lite)

  1. Confirm your saves are backed up to Save Data Cloud if you have Nintendo Switch Online.
  2. Deregister the console from your Nintendo Account. You can do this from the console, or remotely by signing in to your Nintendo Account online and selecting "Deregister" under your primary console. This matters most if you bought digital games.
  3. Initialise the console.System Settings → System → Formatting Options → Initialise Console. This deletes all users, saves, and downloaded software.

Xbox Series X|S / Xbox One

  1. Let cloud saves finish syncingwhile you're still signed in and online.
  2. Full reset.Settings → System → Console info → Reset console → Reset and remove everything. This wipes your account, games, and saved data.
  3. Double-check your account is gone. After the reset, make sure your Microsoft/Xbox account no longer appears on the console. If needed, remove it from your Microsoft account's device list online.

What actually affects your console's value

We price against real second-hand market value, so a few things move the number more than others:

  • Model and generation: a current-generation PS5 or Series X holds far more than a last-generation PS4 or Xbox One. Disc vs digital editions and storage size also matter.
  • Condition: clean casing, no overheating or fan noise, a working disc drive, and controllers without stick drift all push the quote up.
  • Completeness: original box, power cable, HDMI cable, and controllers. Extra controllers in good shape add value.
  • Function: we buy working consoles only. The unit must power on and work properly. A console that does not power on or has a major fault is not accepted.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to reset my console before selling it?+

Yes. A factory reset wipes your account, saved payment methods, downloaded games, and personal data, and it releases the console from your account so the next owner can set it up cleanly. Selling a console that is still signed in to your account is a privacy and security risk, and most buyers will not take it until it is reset.

Will I lose my game saves if I reset the console?+

You will lose anything stored only on the local drive. Back up first: PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online, and Xbox all offer cloud saves that sync your progress to your account, so it follows you to your next console. Sync your saves to the cloud (or copy them to a USB drive) before you reset.

What is "deactivating" a console and why does it matter?+

On PlayStation and Xbox, your account can mark one console as your primary or home device, which unlocks your digital games and subscriptions on it. If you sell without deactivating, those entitlements stay attached to a console you no longer own. Always deactivate as primary/home before you reset, and on PlayStation you can do it remotely from the website if you forgot.

Does a gaming console lose value if I do not have the box?+

The original box and all cables (power, HDMI, controller charging) help, and an extra controller in good condition adds value. Missing accessories will not make a console unsellable, but a complete set in clean condition always earns the higher end of a quote. Mention exactly what you have when you message us.

Do you buy faulty consoles or ones that do not power on?+

We buy working consoles only. The unit needs to power on and function properly to be accepted, a console that does not turn on or has a significant fault is not something we can take. If you are unsure about a smaller issue, such as mild controller stick drift, message us over WhatsApp first and we will tell you honestly before you come in. The final offer always depends on physical inspection.
