How to Prepare a Xiaomi Phone Before Selling

Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phones have two separate locks you must clear before selling: the Mi Account (with Find Device) and the Google account behind Factory Reset Protection. Skip either and the next owner gets stuck after the reset. Here's the right order to back up, sign out, and wipe a Xiaomi phone safely.

Two locks to clear before you reset

A Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone can lock the next owner out after a reset through two separate systems:

  • Mi Account & Find Device:Xiaomi's own anti-theft. If left signed in, the phone stays tied to your Xiaomi identity and can demand your Mi credentials.
  • Google account (FRP): the same Factory Reset Protection used across Android. After a reset, the phone asks for the last Google account that was signed in.

Remove both BEFORE resetting and the phone sets up cleanly for the next owner. Do it in the order below.

Step 1: Back up what you want to keep

  1. Mi Cloud: Settings โ†’ Mi Account โ†’ Mi Cloud โ†’ back up contacts, messages, and gallery.
  2. Google backup: Settings โ†’ Google โ†’ Backup โ†’ back up now. Photos sync via Google Photos; contacts via your Google account.
  3. Mi Mover:if you're switching to another phone, use the Mi Mover app to transfer everything directly.
  4. Manual copy:plug into a computer, set USB to "Transfer files", and copy out anything important from internal storage.

Confirm the backup finished before moving on. Back up first, reset last.

Step 2: Turn off Find Device and remove your Mi Account

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap your Mi Account at the top
  3. Open Find Device and toggle it off
  4. Go back, scroll to the bottom of the Mi Account page
  5. Tap Sign out and confirm with your password

Turning off Find Device first ensures the Xiaomi anti-theft lock is cleared before you sign out.

Step 3: Remove your Google account

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Accounts & sync (or Passwords & accounts)
  3. Tap your Google account
  4. Tap Remove account and confirm
  5. Repeat for any additional Google accounts

Step 4: Sign out of other services

Remove any payment cards from Mi Pay or Google Wallet, and unpair Xiaomi wearables (Mi Band, Watch) and Buds from the companion apps so you can re-pair them to your new phone without issues.

Step 5: Factory reset

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap About phone โ†’ Factory reset (or Settings โ†’ Additional settings โ†’ Backup & reset)
  3. Tap Erase all data
  4. Enter your lock screen PIN/pattern and Mi Account password if prompted
  5. Confirm to begin the wipe

The phone restarts and erases everything โ€” usually 5โ€“10 minutes. Don't turn it off mid-process. When it finishes, you'll reach the setup welcome screen.

Step 6: Verify the locks are cleared

After the reset, tap through setup to the Wi-Fi step and connect. If the phone moves straight to "set up as new" without demanding a Google or Mi Account, both locks are off and the phone is ready to sell. If it asks for a previous Google account, you missed Step 3 โ€” sign in to clear it, sign out, and reset again.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a Mi Account and FRP?+

They're two separate locks. The Mi Account powers Xiaomi's own 'Find Device' anti-theft and Mi Cloud, and can lock the device to your Xiaomi identity. Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is Google's system that demands the last signed-in Google account after a reset. You must remove BOTH before selling, or the phone can lock the next owner out.

Do I need to unlock the bootloader before selling?+

No. Bootloader unlocking is for installing custom software and is unrelated to selling. Leave it as it is. All you need is to remove your accounts and do a normal factory reset from Settings โ€” that's enough for a clean, sellable phone.

Where do I find my Xiaomi backups?+

Xiaomi backs up to Mi Cloud (Settings โ†’ Mi Account โ†’ Mi Cloud) and Google (Settings โ†’ Google โ†’ Backup). Photos can sync via Google Photos or Mi Cloud Gallery. If moving to another phone, use the Mi Mover app to transfer directly. Always confirm the backup completed before you reset.

Will Berry Nice buy a Xiaomi phone?+

Yes โ€” we buy Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO along with all major brands. The one hard rule for any Android: we don't accept telco-locked Android phones. As long as it isn't carrier-locked and you've cleared your Mi and Google accounts, we can quote it.

I forgot my Mi Account password โ€” what now?+

Reset it BEFORE the factory reset, not after. Go to account.xiaomi.com on any browser and use 'Forgot password' to recover access, then sign out on the phone. Doing this before the reset is far easier than trying to clear an Mi-locked device afterwards.
