How to Wipe Your MacBook Before Selling โ€” Complete Guide

Selling your MacBook? Before you hand it over, you need to make sure your personal data is completely removed and the device is ready for its next owner. This isn't just about privacy โ€” a properly wiped MacBook also gets a smoother inspection and a faster payout, because there's no activation lock or account issue holding things up.

Before you start: what you need

Make sure you have the following ready before beginning the wipe process. Once you erase, there is no going back.

  • A backup of everything you want to keep (Time Machine, iCloud, or an external drive)
  • Your Apple ID password (you will need it to sign out of iCloud)
  • The MacBook plugged into power (do not let it die mid-erase)
  • At least 30 minutes of uninterrupted time

Step 1: Back up your data

Use Time Machine with an external drive, or make sure your important files are in iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or another cloud service. Check Downloads, Desktop, Documents, and Photos โ€” these are the folders people most often forget.

Step 2: Sign out of iCloud

This is the most important step. If you skip this, Activation Lock stays on and the MacBook becomes unsellable.

  • Open System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS)
  • Click your name / Apple ID at the top
  • Scroll down and click Sign Out
  • When asked, choose whether to keep a copy of iCloud data on this Mac โ€” it does not matter since you are erasing next
  • Enter your Apple ID password to confirm

Step 3: Sign out of iMessage

Open the Messages app, go to Messages โ†’ Settings โ†’ iMessage, and click Sign Out. This deregisters your phone number from iMessage on this device.

Step 4: Unpair Bluetooth devices

If you have AirPods, a Magic Mouse, or other Bluetooth devices paired, unpair them in System Settings โ†’ Bluetooth. This avoids confusion when you pair them with your next device.

Step 5: Erase the MacBook

The process depends on whether your MacBook has Apple Silicon (M1 or later) or an Intel chip.

Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4):

  • Go to System Settings โ†’ General โ†’ Transfer or Reset โ†’ Erase All Content and Settings
  • Enter your Mac password when prompted
  • The Mac will erase and restart to the setup assistant screen

Intel Mac:

  • Restart and hold Command + R to enter Recovery Mode
  • Open Disk Utility, select your startup disk, and click Erase
  • Close Disk Utility and choose Reinstall macOS
  • Let it install โ€” the Mac will restart to the setup assistant

Step 6: Leave it at the setup screen

Do not set up the Mac after erasing. Leave it at the "Hello" / language selection screen. This is the state Berry Nice needs it in for inspection โ€” signed out, erased, and ready.

What to bring when you sell

When you come to Berry Nice for your MacBook buyback, bring the MacBook itself (erased, at the setup screen), the original charger if you have it, and the original box if available. The charger and box are not required but they add value to the offer.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I forget to sign out of iCloud?+

If you erase the MacBook without signing out of iCloud first, Activation Lock stays enabled. The next person who tries to set it up will be prompted for your Apple ID password. This makes the device unsellable until you sign in remotely and remove it from your account via iCloud.com โ†’ Find My Devices.

Do I need to deauthorize iTunes or Apple Music?+

It's good practice but not strictly necessary for selling. When you sign out of iCloud and erase the device, most authorizations are cleared. If you want to be thorough, go to Account โ†’ Authorizations โ†’ Deauthorize This Computer in the Music or TV app before erasing.

How do I check my battery cycle count before selling?+

Click the Apple menu โ†’ About This Mac โ†’ More Info โ†’ System Report โ†’ Hardware โ†’ Power. Look for 'Cycle Count' under Battery Information. This number tells the buyer (and Berry Nice) how heavily the battery has been used. Under 300 is good; over 500 starts to reduce the offer.

Should I reinstall macOS after erasing?+

Not necessary. When you use 'Erase All Content and Settings' on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 and later), the Mac is left in a clean setup-assistant state โ€” ready for the next owner. On Intel Macs, you may need to reinstall macOS via Recovery Mode (Command+R on boot).

Does erasing my MacBook affect my other Apple devices?+

No โ€” signing out of iCloud on one device doesn't affect your other devices. Your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch continue working normally with your Apple ID.
