Intel vs Apple Silicon: Which MacBook Holds Its Resale Value Better in Malaysia?

If you are about to sell a MacBook, the chip inside is one of the first things a buyer looks at. Apple Silicon models (M1 and newer) generally hold value better than Intel models, but the gap depends on the exact model, condition and battery. Here is how to think about it before you ask for a quote.

Why the chip matters to a buyer

Apple moved the Mac line from Intel processors to its own Apple Silicon chips starting with the M1. Apple Silicon MacBooks are generally faster for their age, run cooler and tend to last longer on battery. Buyers know this, so the chip becomes a main pricing factor. An Intel MacBook from a similar year is usually valued lower than the Apple Silicon equivalent.

How to tell which one you have

  1. Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner.
  2. Choose About This Mac.
  3. Look for Chip (Apple Silicon, for example M1 or M2) or Processor (Intel Core).
  4. Note the model year, RAM and storage shown on the same screen.

If you are not sure about the year, our guide on how to check your MacBook model year and specs walks through it.

What usually holds value better

  • Apple Silicon over Intel: the newer architecture is the main reason newer MacBooks keep more of their price.
  • Newer generation over older: within Apple Silicon, an M3 or M4 unit is generally valued above an M1 of the same type.
  • Higher RAM and storage: a better-specced unit is valued above a base unit of the same generation.
  • Good battery health: a low cycle count helps both chip types. See how to check your MacBook battery cycle count.
  • Clean body and screen: no dents, no screen marks, no keyboard issues.

Selling an Intel MacBook

An Intel MacBook that works well is still sellable. Expect a lower figure than an Apple Silicon unit, and keep a few extra checks in mind: make sure it is signed out of iCloud, Find My is off, and the keyboard, trackpad, ports and display all work. Condition and battery matter a lot for older units, because they decide whether the laptop is a practical buy for the next owner.

Selling an Apple Silicon MacBook

Apple Silicon units are the easier sell. Do the same signed-out checks, and have the model, chip, RAM and storage ready when you ask for a quote. Original charger and box are a small plus but not the deciding factor.

Should you sell now or wait?

There is rarely a reason to wait. New generations push older models down in value, and a MacBook sitting in a drawer does not gain value. If you plan to upgrade, selling before or soon after you buy the replacement usually gets you more than selling a year later.

Frequently asked questions

Is an Intel MacBook still worth selling?+

Yes, in most cases, as long as it powers on and is not locked. Intel models are valued lower than comparable Apple Silicon models, but working units with a clean body and decent battery still have buyers. WhatsApp the exact model and year for an estimate.

How do I know if my MacBook is Intel or Apple Silicon?+

Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. An Apple Silicon Mac shows "Chip" followed by M1, M2, M3 or similar. An Intel Mac shows "Processor" followed by an Intel Core name.

Does RAM and storage matter as much as the chip?+

Both matter. A higher-spec configuration is usually valued above a base one of the same generation, and on Apple Silicon models the RAM cannot be upgraded later, so buyers pay attention to it.

Will waiting make my Intel MacBook worth more?+

Unlikely. Older models generally lose value as newer generations arrive and software support narrows. If you do not need the laptop, selling sooner is usually the better call than waiting.

Do you buy MacBooks that are still locked to my Apple ID?+

No. A MacBook with Activation Lock or a Find My lock still on cannot be taken. Sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My before you sell.
