Selling a Damaged Samsung in Malaysia: What Still Gets Cash and What Doesn't

The one damage type that usually ends the deal

A physically cracked or shattered front screen. Samsung flagships use curved or high-end AMOLED panels, and replacing one costs a large share of what the phone is worth second-hand. Once we add that repair cost to the resale risk, there is usually no offer left that makes sense for you or for us.

This is why a cracked Samsung is treated differently from a cracked iPhone. It is not about the brand. It is about how much the screen costs to replace compared to the phone's resale price.

Damage we normally still buy

Most other problems reduce the offer but do not stop the sale. These are the ones we see most often:

• Display lines or dead pixels on a screen that is not physically cracked.
• AMOLED burn-in or green tint. Mild burn-in takes a lighter deduction. Burn-in visible on every screen takes a bigger one.
• Cracked back glass. Cosmetic in most cases, and much cheaper to deal with than the front.
• Faulty camera on any lens, including ultrawide and telephoto.
• Battery that drains fast or has swollen. Tell us if it is swollen so we can handle it safely.
• Charging port, buttons, speaker or mic faults.
• Fingerprint sensor or ghost touch issues.
• Z Fold and Z Flip inner screen damage, such as a crease crack or dead pixels on the fold. The deduction is large, but we still buy.

Damage that needs a hands-on check

Two situations can't be quoted from photos alone:

1. Water damage. A wet phone can look fine and fail a week later, or look bad and still work. We test it in person before giving any number.
2. Phones that won't turn on. The cause could be a flat battery, a charging fault or a dead board. Only testing tells us which.

For both, walk in rather than sending a long description. It saves you a round of back-and-forth that ends with "we need to see it" anyway.

Locks matter more than damage

A damaged phone with a clean lock status sells. A perfect phone with a lock problem does not. Before anything else, check these:

• Google account (FRP) removed. If the phone still asks for the previous Google login after a reset, we cannot buy it.
• Samsung account removed. Sign out under Settings, Accounts and backup, Manage accounts.
• Not telco-locked. Telco-locked Android phones are not accepted, whatever the condition.

Do this before the screen gets worse. Signing out needs a working display and touch, so a phone that is slowly failing is easier to clear today than next month.

What moves the offer on a damaged Samsung

The same damage can lead to very different offers. The main drivers:

1. Model. A recent S Ultra or Z Fold holds value even when damaged. An older A-series phone has less room to absorb repair costs.
2. Number of faults. Burn-in alone is one deduction. Burn-in plus a dead camera plus a weak battery stacks up.
3. Original parts. A phone that has already had a third-party screen or battery fitted is worth less than one with all Samsung parts.
4. Storage. Higher storage still helps, damaged or not.

How to describe the damage so the quote holds

Most gaps between a WhatsApp estimate and the final offer come from damage that was not mentioned. Send us:

• Full model name and storage (Settings, About phone)
• Clear photos of the front screen with the display on, plus the back
• A photo of a plain white or grey screen, which shows burn-in and tint
• Whether the phone turns on, charges, and responds to touch
• Any past repairs, and whether they were done at a Samsung service centre
• Confirmation that the Samsung and Google accounts are removed

An honest description means the number you get on WhatsApp is close to the number you get at the counter. Hiding a fault only moves the surprise to inspection day.
