How to Check Battery Health on a Samsung or Android Phone Before Selling
iPhone owners get a single Settings screen showing Maximum Capacity. Android owners get nothing that obvious, which is why most people selling a Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, or Pixel have no idea what their battery is actually worth. There are four ways to find the number, and knowing it before you walk in means no surprises at inspection.
Why battery health moves your price
Battery is one of the few parts of a used phone that nobody can judge by looking at it. A phone can be scratch-free and still hold 78 percent of its original charge, which means the next owner is hunting for a plug by mid-afternoon. That is why every buyback inspection checks it.
Two numbers matter. Capacity is how much charge the battery still holds compared to when it was new, expressed as a percentage. Cycle count is how many full charge cycles it has been through. A low cycle count with a degraded capacity usually points to heat damage or fast-charging abuse; a high cycle count with healthy capacity just means a well-treated phone that was used a lot.
Method 1: Samsung Members (Samsung phones)
This is the most reliable option on a Galaxy and it takes about a minute.
- Open the Samsung Members app (pre-installed on most Galaxy phones, otherwise free from the Galaxy Store)
- Tap Support at the bottom
- Tap Phone diagnostics or Get help → Interactive checks
- Select Battery status
You will see a life status of Good, Normal, Weak, or similar. On newer One UI versions, tapping through shows the actual capacity and, on Android 14 and later, the manufacture date too. "Good" broadly maps to above 80 percent capacity.
Newer Galaxy models also expose it directly: Settings → Battery → Battery protection or Device care → Diagnostics, depending on your One UI version.
Method 2: The dialler code (most Android phones)
Many Android phones have a hidden test menu reachable from the phone dialler. Open the dialler and type:

Two warnings. First, these menus are engineering tools, so read the values and back out without changing anything. Second, several manufacturers have removed or restricted these codes in recent Android versions, so if nothing happens when you type it, the code is simply disabled on your model. Move to the next method rather than hunting for a workaround.
Method 3: Battery usage and cycle count in Settings
Android 14 introduced a standard battery health section that more manufacturers are now adopting.
- Google Pixel (Pixel 8 and newer): Settings → Battery → Battery health shows cycle count and manufacture date
- Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO: Security app → Battery, or Settings → Battery → Battery protection on newer HyperOS builds
- OPPO / realme / OnePlus: Settings → Battery → Battery health (ColorOS 13 and later, OxygenOS 13 and later)
- vivo / iQOO: Settings → Battery → Battery health on newer Funtouch OS and OriginOS versions
If your phone is older than about 2022 you may not have this screen at all. That is normal and not a problem, it just means we will read the battery during inspection instead.
Method 4: Let the shop read it
Honestly, this is what most people end up doing, and it is fine. A proper inspection reads capacity and cycle count directly from the battery controller rather than from an app estimate, so the number we work from is the real one. Checking beforehand is about avoiding surprises, not about producing evidence.
How battery health translates into your quote
There is no fixed ringgit figure, because a 10 percent capacity drop on a flagship is worth more than the whole battery on a budget phone. What is consistent is the direction:
- Above 90 percent: no deduction, this is effectively as-new
- 85 to 90 percent: minimal effect on most models
- 80 to 85 percent: small deduction, it is the last comfortable band
- Below 80 percent: a real deduction, because the next owner will want it replaced
- Third-party battery installed: treated as a non-original part regardless of the percentage
Two things confuse people here. A swollen battery, the kind that lifts the screen or back glass away from the frame, is a safety issue rather than a grading issue and changes what we can accept. And a phone that will not hold a charge at all is a different conversation from one with a tired battery.
Before you bring the phone in
- Charge to at least 50 percent so the inspection can run properly
- Note your capacity or cycle count if your phone shows it
- Back up everything, then remove your Google and manufacturer accounts before factory resetting
- Bring the box and original charger if you still have them
- Mention any battery replacement, official or not, when you message us

Why does Android not show battery health like iPhone does?+
Apple exposes a single Maximum Capacity percentage in Settings. Google never built an equivalent into stock Android, so each manufacturer decided on its own. Samsung hides it inside Samsung Members diagnostics, Xiaomi and OPPO bury it in engineering menus, and Pixel only started surfacing battery cycle count publicly on newer models running Android 14 and later. The data exists on almost every phone; it is just not in one standard place.
What battery percentage is considered good on a used Android?+
As a rough guide, above 90 percent of original capacity is strong, 85 to 90 is normal for a phone that is one to two years old, 80 to 85 is acceptable but starting to show, and below 80 usually means a noticeable deduction. Cycle count matters too: under 400 cycles is light use, 400 to 800 is average, and above 800 is heavy.
Does a replaced battery help or hurt my buyback price?+
It depends on who replaced it. An official service centre battery with a record is generally fine and can help if the old one was badly degraded. A third-party or unbranded battery is treated as a non-original part and usually reduces the offer, because it affects safety, capacity accuracy, and resale. Tell us upfront either way, it comes out during inspection anyway.
Should I replace the battery before selling?+
Usually not. A battery replacement in Malaysia often costs more than the price difference it recovers on a mid-range phone, so you end up paying to break even. It can make sense on a recent flagship where the battery is the only thing dragging the grade down. Get a quote as-is first, then compare.
Are third-party battery health apps accurate?+
Treat them as an estimate, not a fact. Most Play Store battery apps calculate health from charge and discharge behaviour over time rather than reading a real capacity value, so a freshly installed app has almost no data to work with. The built-in manufacturer diagnostics and the on-device dialler codes are far more reliable.
