What Affects Your Phone Buyback Value in Malaysia β 7 Key Factors
Got two different quotes for the same phone from two different buyers? That's normal β but the reason it happens isn't random. Every honest buyback service in Malaysia uses roughly the same seven factors to calculate your offer. Here's a breakdown of each, what affects them, and what you can actually do to maximize your value.
The short answer: it's about condition + demand
Every honest buyback service in Malaysia calculates offers using roughly the same logic: current market demand for this exact model and storage, multiplied by what condition your specific device is in.
The seven factors below cover both sides of that equation β three of them are about what the device IS (factors 1, 7), and four are about what your specific device LOOKS and FUNCTIONS like (factors 2β6).
Factor 1: Model and storage
The single biggest factor. An iPhone 17 Pro Max in great condition is worth multiples of an iPhone 12 in the same condition, simply because more people in the resale market want the newer model.
Within a model, storage matters more than people realize:
- Higher storage = higher buyback. A 256GB iPhone typically fetches noticeably more than the 128GB version of the same model in the same condition.
- 1TB modelsaren't always proportionally higher than 512GB because the resale market for 1TB is smaller β fewer buyers need that much storage.
- Cellular/Wi-Fi version matters for iPads: Wi-Fi + Cellular versions resell at a premium.
Factor 2: Physical condition (screen, body, ports)
This breaks down into three sub-categories:
- Screen:any cracks, deep scratches, dead pixels, screen burn, or yellow tint will move the device to a lower tier. Screen protectors don't count β we're looking at the underlying screen.
- Body:dents, deep scratches, paint chipping, bent frame, or cracked back glass. Surface scratches that aren't visible from arm's length usually don't affect the tier.
- Ports and buttons: charging port lint or damage, mute switch broken, volume buttons stuck, Face ID dot projector damaged. These reduce the tier because they affect daily usability.
We classify into three rough tiers β Excellent (looks nearly new), Good (light cosmetic wear, fully functional), and Fair (visible wear or minor damage, but works). Each tier has its own price range per model.
Factor 3: Battery health
For iPhones, this is precise β iOS shows it in Settings β Battery β Battery Health & Charging as a single percentage. We use that number directly.
For Samsung and other Android phones, we test the battery during inspection.
Rough impact on quote:
- 100% to 95%: top tier
- 94% to 85%: normal β most resold iPhones are here
- 84% to 80%: slight reduction
- Below 80%: meaningful reduction (Apple itself flags this as degraded)
- "Service" warning or non-genuine battery message: larger reduction
See our guide on how to check iPhone battery health for step-by-step instructions.
Factor 4: Lock status (iCloud, Google, carrier)
Three types of locks can affect your device:
- iCloud lock (Apple) / FRP (Samsung):if Find My iPhone or a Google account is still active at the time of inspection, we can't complete the transfer. This either pauses the sale or drops the offer significantly. Always remove before bringing the device in.
- Carrier lock:a device locked to Celcom, Digi, Maxis, U Mobile, or another carrier resells for less than an unlocked device. If you're not sure, check Settings β General β About β Carrier Lock (iOS) or use your IMEI to check carrier status.
- MDM / corporate lock:if your device was issued by a company and has Mobile Device Management installed, you'll need IT to release it before we can buy it.
See our guides on removing iCloud and factory resetting Samsung for step-by-step instructions.
Factor 5: Original parts vs replacements
Apple and Samsung both have ways of detecting whether the screen, battery, camera, or other major components are original.
iOS shows this transparently:
- Settings β General β About β look for "Genuine Apple Part" or "Unknown Part" notices
- Settings β Battery β Battery Health β "Important Battery Message" flags non-genuine batteries
Why does this matter? An unauthorized screen or battery replacement often comes with reduced functionality (no True Tone, Face ID may degrade, battery health doesn't display correctly), and reduces the next owner's confidence in the device. It moves the device to a lower tier.
This isn't about you β many people replace screens through third-party shops because they're cheaper. We're just being transparent: it changes the tier. Disclose it upfront when you message us and you'll get an accurate quote.
Factor 6: Box and accessories
Resale-ready package, in descending order of impact:
- Original box with matching IMEI/serial: small bump, larger for newer flagships
- Original charging cable: small bump
- Original adapter (if it came with one): small bump
- Original EarPods/headphones: small bump if sealed
- SIM ejector tool, stickers, documentation: tiny bump
- Original spec sheet showing purchase date: useful if the device is under 1 year old (residual warranty has value)
If you've lost the box but still have the cable, message us with what you have β we'll factor it in.
Factor 7: Current market demand
This is the factor you can't control, but it's a real input.
- SeptemberβOctober:new iPhones launch. Previous models soften 5β15%.
- February: new Samsung Galaxy S launches. Previous models and other Android flagships soften.
- School holidays / Hari Raya / Christmas: demand for mid-range phones increases as gifts.
- Specific model scarcity: models with home buttons (iPhone SE, iPhone 8), or specific colors, can hold value or rise if demand outstrips supply.
Why we don't lock prices: market value moves week to week. Our published guides give you a range; the WhatsApp quote gives you today's number.
How Berry Nice calculates your quote
We use transparent condition-based pricing:
- Identify model + storage from your WhatsApp message β base value
- Apply condition tier (Excellent / Good / Fair) β tier multiplier
- Subtract or add for battery health, lock status, original parts
- Subtract or add for box and accessories
- Apply current market demand multiplier for that exact model
- Send you an estimated range, valid for that day
On walk-in, we verify each factor in front of you β most inspections are completed within 15β30 minutes β and the final offer reflects what we actually see. Once you accept, instant payout via DuitNow or bank transfer.
What you can do to maximize value before selling
The high-leverage moves, in priority order:
- Remove all locks first. iCloud off, Google account signed out, carrier unlock confirmed. Skipping this is the single biggest avoidable value loss.
- Sell sooner rather than later.Used phones lose 5β15% per quarter on average. The flagship you bought 18 months ago is worth a lot more today than it will be in 6 months.
- Find the original box and accessories. Even partial accessories help.
- Clean the device. Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth (no harsh cleaners) on the screen and body. A clean device looks closer to its actual condition.
- Don't replace the battery just to boost valueβ unless it's already throwing warnings. The math usually doesn't work out.
- Be upfront about any damage or non-genuine parts. Surprises during inspection result in lower offers than honest disclosure upfront.
Message us with your device details and we'll send back an estimated quote based on a fair market-based assessment of all seven factors. No fake guarantees, no pressure to sell β just an honest number for you to consider.

WhatsApp Berry NiceFrequently asked questions
Does a cracked screen mean zero buyback value?+
No. A cracked screen reduces value but doesn't eliminate it β the device still has working internals (battery, motherboard, cameras, speakers) that have resale value. We still buy cracked-screen devices, just at a lower tier. The exception is if the screen damage prevents us from verifying that other components work (e.g., we can't test Face ID because the screen is too damaged to register touch).
How much does the box add to my buyback price?+
It varies by model, but the original box (with serial number matching the device) typically adds a small premium β particularly for current-generation flagships where collectors want a complete set. For older devices (3+ years), the box adds less. Accessories like the original cable, adapter, EarPods, and SIM ejector tool each add small amounts when included and in good condition.
Why do prices change month to month?+
Used phone prices follow the same supply-and-demand logic as any market. When a new iPhone launches in September, the previous year's model drops in value as more people upgrade and resell. When Black Friday hits, Samsung prices can soften. When a specific model becomes scarce (e.g., older iPhones with home buttons), prices can hold or rise. This is why we don't lock prices β your quote reflects today's market value.
Does my phone case help protect resale value?+
Yes β significantly. A phone that has lived in a case from day one will typically be in better cosmetic condition (no edge dings, fewer back-glass scratches), which directly affects the condition tier we assign. The case itself doesn't add value, but the condition it preserves does.
Should I repair before selling, or sell as-is?+
Usually sell as-is unless the repair is very cheap relative to the value gained. The math: if a screen replacement costs RM 500 and would bump your buyback offer by RM 600, it's worth doing. But if it costs RM 800 to gain RM 400, it's not. Message us with the device details and the quote you got for repair β we'll tell you the buyback delta so you can decide.
