How to Prepare a OnePlus Phone Before Selling
OnePlus phones run OxygenOS on top of Android, so they carry the same Google Factory Reset Protection (FRP) as any Android device, plus a OnePlus account tied to cloud backup and Find Device. If you reset before removing those accounts, the next owner gets locked out and the phone becomes unsellable. Here is the exact order to back up, sign out, and wipe your OnePlus (or Nord) safely.
Why preparation matters for OnePlus
Two things can lock a OnePlus after a reset if you skip the steps:
- Google account (FRP): if a Google account was signed in before the wipe, OxygenOS demands those exact credentials on setup. No credentials = a dead phone for the next owner.
- OnePlus account (OnePlus ID): ties OnePlus Cloud, Find Device, and Clone Phone backups to you. Left signed in, the next owner can see traces of your data and you keep getting notifications.
Remove both BEFORE you reset. It is a 10-minute job in the right order, and it is the difference between a top-tier quote and an unsellable handset. If you want a price before you start, you can get a OnePlus buyback quote first so you know what to expect.
Step 1: Back up what you want to keep
Once you wipe, on-device data is gone. Back up first:
- Google backup: Settings → System → Backup → turn on Backup by Google One. This covers apps, call history, contacts, and settings. Photos sync via Google Photos.
- OnePlus Clone Phone: if you are moving to another OnePlus/OPPO, use Clone Phone to transfer everything directly.
- WhatsApp: open WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → Back up to Google Drive, then verify it completed.
- Manual copy:connect to a computer via USB, switch to "File transfer", and copy out any photos, videos, or documents you want to keep.
Back up first, verify it worked, then move on. Do not reset yet.
Step 2: Turn off Find Device and remove your OnePlus account
- Open Settings
- Tap your OnePlus Account (your name at the top)
- Open Find Device settings and turn it off
- Return to the account screen and scroll down
- Tap Log out / Sign out
- Enter your OnePlus ID password to confirm
This detaches OnePlus Cloud and Find Device so nothing is tied to your identity after the wipe.
Step 3: Remove your Google account (the FRP step)
This is the most important step. Removing the Google account before the reset switches FRP off for the next owner.
- Open Settings
- Tap Accounts (or Users & accounts)
- Tap your Google account
- Tap Remove account
- Confirm with your phone PIN/pattern if asked
If you have more than one Google account signed in (personal + work), remove all of them.
Step 4: Remove screen lock and other accounts
- Screen lock:Settings → Security & lock screen → set the lock to None so the new owner is not blocked.
- Other accounts: remove any Samsung Health, banking, or social logins you do not want transferred.
- Remove the SIM and memory card before you hand the phone over.
Step 5: Factory reset your OnePlus
Now that accounts are detached, it is safe to wipe:
- Open Settings
- Tap System settings → Reset options (or Back up and reset)
- Tap Erase all data (factory reset)
- Tap Erase all data and enter your PIN if prompted
- Confirm and let the phone reboot and erase
The reset takes a few minutes. Keep the phone plugged in or above 50% battery, and do not power it off mid-wipe.
Step 6: Verify FRP is off before you sell
- Walk through setup until the Wi-Fi screen and connect
- FRP off:you reach "set up as new" with no demand for a previous Google account, the phone is ready
- FRP on:it asks for "a Google account previously synced", meaning Step 3 was missed
If FRP is still on, sign in with your old Google account to clear it, sign out, and reset again from Step 3.
What to hand over for the best quote
For the highest buyback tier, bring:
- The phone, reset to the welcome screen (FRP verified off)
- Original charger and cable if you still have them
- Original box (adds value on newer models)
- Any cases or extras (optional)

WhatsApp Berry NiceFrequently asked questions
Does OnePlus have Factory Reset Protection (FRP)?+
Yes. OnePlus runs Android, so Google FRP applies. If a Google account is still signed in when you factory reset, the phone will demand those exact Google credentials on the next setup. Always remove your Google account BEFORE resetting, otherwise the phone is locked to you and cannot be resold.
What is the difference between my OnePlus account and my Google account?+
Your Google account controls FRP, Play Store purchases, and Google backup. Your OnePlus (OnePlus ID / OPPO account) controls OnePlus Cloud, Find Device, and Clone Phone backups. Remove both before selling. The Google account is the critical one for lock-out; the OnePlus account protects your personal cloud data.
Do you accept telco-locked OnePlus phones?+
No. We buy all major Android brands including OnePlus, but we do not accept telco-locked or contract-locked Android phones. Your OnePlus must be free of carrier locks. If you are unsure, WhatsApp us the model and we can talk you through checking before you come in.
Will a factory reset remove the FRP lock?+
No, and this is the most common mistake. A factory reset alone does NOT remove FRP; it re-arms it with whatever Google account was last signed in. You must remove the Google account in Settings first, then reset. Doing it in the wrong order locks the phone.
How do I check my OnePlus is ready to sell?+
After the reset, walk through setup to the Wi-Fi step and connect. If it lets you continue to "set up as new" without asking for a previous Google account, FRP is off and the phone is ready. If it demands a Google account, sign in with your old one, then sign out and reset again.
