How to Wipe Company Laptops Before a Bulk Sale in Malaysia

Selling a batch of old company laptops is straightforward when the machines are clean and unlocked, and slow when they are not. This checklist covers what an IT team should do before handing laptops over, and is honest about what a standard factory reset does and does not guarantee.

Start with what you can promise

Decide your data standard before anything else. If your company policy allows a thorough factory reset on encrypted drives, the steps below will do. If it requires certified data destruction, get that done by a provider who can issue the paperwork. Berry Nice performs a thorough factory reset on devices we buy, and does not issue destruction certificates.

Step 1: List and sort the batch

Record each laptop's brand, model, year, serial number and condition. A simple sheet is enough. Our guide to building a device inventory shows what to capture.

Step 2: Back up what the company needs

Move files that staff or the business still need to a server or cloud storage. Do this before wiping, because a reset cannot be undone.

Step 3: Release management and accounts

  • Remove from device management: Intune, Jamf, Apple Business Manager or any similar tool. See how to release company devices from MDM.
  • Sign out of work accounts: Microsoft, Google and single sign-on accounts.
  • Mac only: sign out of iCloud and turn off Find My so Activation Lock is cleared.
  • Remove firmware and BIOS passwords so the next owner can boot the machine.

Step 4: Make sure encryption is on, then reset

  1. Windows: confirm BitLocker or device encryption is on, then use Settings, System, Recovery, Reset this PC, and choose to remove everything. Our Windows wipe guide has the full steps.
  2. Mac: use Erase All Content and Settings, or erase the disk from recovery and reinstall macOS. See how to wipe a MacBook.
  3. Confirm each laptop reaches the first setup screen.

Step 5: Check the hardware

Test the screen, keyboard, trackpad, ports and battery, and note anything faulty. Include the original charger. Working laptops are valued; units that will not power on are a different conversation, so flag them in your list.

Step 6: Hand over

Send us the list with quantities and models. We reply with an estimate based on market prices, confirmed after physical inspection. Collection is possible in selected Klang Valley areas, and an official invoice is available on request. For the full process, see corporate buyback for companies.

Frequently asked questions

Is a factory reset enough for company laptops?+

For most business purposes, a thorough reset with encryption enabled is a reasonable step. It is not certified data destruction. If your policy or compliance rules require a certificate or physical destruction, arrange that separately before the sale.

Do you provide a data destruction certificate?+

No. Berry Nice does buyback and value recovery, and performs a thorough factory reset. We do not issue certified data-destruction certificates or use certified wiping software.

What about laptops still enrolled in Intune, Jamf or similar?+

Release them from management before the sale. A laptop still tied to your organisation cannot be set up cleanly by the next owner, and it may not be accepted.

Can you collect laptops from our office?+

Collection is available in selected Klang Valley areas. WhatsApp us the quantity and location and we will confirm if we can come to you.

Can we get an official invoice?+

Yes, an official invoice is available on request.
