Yes. Both Pro models were officially announced on 9 September and have been on sale in Malaysia since 18 September. The confusion around the iPhone 18 release date comes from Apple splitting the lineup: the Pro models arrive now, the cheaper iPhone models next year.

When did iPhone 18 pre-orders open in Malaysia?

Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro opened at 8pm Malaysian time on Saturday 12 September 2026. Some pre-launch reports said the 11th; Apple Malaysia confirmed the 12th. The phones are sold through Apple, the Apple Store, and authorised resellers and telcos.

When did the iPhone 18 go on sale?

Friday 18 September 2026. Malaysia was in Apple's first wave, so the new phones landed the same day as the major markets, six days after pre-orders opened.

What Apple announced — and what it did not

Two devices: the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy, with an aluminium frame and storage from 256GB to 2TB. Apple also announced its first foldable iPhone, named iPhone Duo, with a later launch date.

What Apple did not announce matters just as much: no standard iPhone 18 and no iPhone 18e. Apple plans to bring those to market separately. Apple did raise the Malaysian prices of the older models it still sells: the iPhone Air now starts at RM5,299, the iPhone 17 at RM4,299 and the iPhone 17e at RM3,299, RM300 more each than before. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max left Apple's line-up, as previous-generation Pro models normally do.

A20 Pro chip, speed and performance

The Apple iPhone 18 Pro runs the A20 Pro chip. Apple publishes no process node, so the widely reported 2-nanometer figure is a report rather than a confirmed spec, and because no iPhone spec sheet has ever listed RAM, the 9GB or 12GB of RAM claims stay unverified too. What Apple does claim is sustained performance: speed that holds through a long gaming session instead of dropping off after a few minutes.

Camera system, sensor set and variable aperture

A variable aperture allows control over depth of field and light intake: the main camera opens up for low-light photos and stops down when you want more depth in the frame. It is the first iPhone camera system to do this optically rather than in software, and for anyone who shoots a lot of photos it is the most meaningful change in the camera this year.

Display, screen, Ceramic Shield and the Dynamic Island

Both devices support ProMotion and an always-on display. The front is Ceramic Shield 2 and the back is Ceramic Shield as well — Apple addressing the two ways a screen and body actually break. Face ID is unchanged, enabled by TrueDepth technology in the front camera. Apple calls the Dynamic Island redesigned; the cutout does look tighter, but without a published measurement, smaller Dynamic Island is a fair description rather than a spec you can quote.

Battery life, charging and support for fast charge

Battery life is where the Pro Max pulls ahead: up to 45 hours of video playback against up to 36 hours on the iPhone 18 Pro, eight hours more than last year's Pro Max. Both fast charge to 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable USB-C adapter, or in 30 minutes on a MagSafe Charger with a 35W adapter. Apple publishes no mAh figure, so the reported capacity above 5,300 mAh is a teardown estimate.

C2 modem, connectivity and safety features

Both Pro models carry the next-generation C2 modem. The phones retain the USB-C port standard, and satellite access carries over, as does access to Emergency SOS from outside network coverage. Apple Pay, Wallet and the rest of the iOS stack are unchanged. If you travel, the modem generation matters more than headline chip speed.

iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max: which to buy

Both share the A20 Pro chip, the camera system, the sensor set, Ceramic Shield, Face ID and storage from 256GB to 2TB. Only these differ:

If you shoot a lot of photos and video, the nine extra hours is the difference worth paying for. Everything else about the two devices is identical.

Is the Apple iPhone 18 Pro worth upgrading to?

It depends what you are coming from. From an iPhone 17 Pro the honest answer is no for most people: the display, the chip and the camera sensor set are improvements rather than transformations, and performance on last year's Apple iPhone is already past the point where apps feel slow. From an iPhone 14 or older the case is much stronger — three generations of chip, display and camera features compound, battery life improves, and safety features such as Crash Detection may not be on your phone at all.

If your reason is the camera, the variable aperture and the depth control it brings are the features that justify it. If your reason is speed, it will not feel like the leap the spec sheet suggests. And if you just want a newer Apple iPhone cheaply, the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 are still sold by Apple, run the same iOS and carry most of the same software features for less.

Rumour versus reality: what the pre-launch reports got wrong

For most of 2026 the search results for iphone 18 were rumour roundups. Now the phones are official, here is how the most repeated current rumors held up — which matters if you are reading older articles that have not been updated since the announcement. Several of these were reported as near-certain features and simply are not in the shipping devices.

Two of those deserve a closer look, because they are the ones that change what you should actually do.

Did iPhone 18 prices actually go up?

Not at the entry tiers in Malaysia, which is the opposite of what most coverage predicted. Many pre-launch reports forecast a price hike on the Pro models because of rising memory costs, and Apple had already raised Mac and iPad prices in Malaysia in June 2026.

What happened here is narrower. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at RM5,499 and the Pro Max at RM5,999, matching last year's Pro and Pro Max exactly. The increases sit at the top: 1TB is RM1,000 more, 2TB RM2,000 more. The most expensive iPhones got more expensive, and so did the older models Apple still sells; the new Pro models most people buy did not. When budgeting, the number that matters is the sticker price minus what your existing device is worth.

Is there a base iPhone 18? The split-launch strategy explained

Not this month. Apple has moved to a split launch: Pro models now, the standard iPhone next spring. The standard iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e are expected in spring 2027, reportedly with 6.3-inch and 6.1-inch screen sizes, so the new iPhone models span fall 2026 and spring 2027 rather than arriving together. Apple is expected to keep this pattern going forward.

If you were waiting for the "normal" iPhone 18 because the Pro is more phone than you need, the honest advice is that you are waiting until next year. The iPhone 17 at RM4,299 and the iPhone Air at RM5,299 are both still current, still sold by Apple, and cheaper than the new iPhone 18 Pro — for a lot of iPhone users that is the more sensible upgrade, and both run the same iOS release with the same software features as the Pro.

The first foldable iPhone: iPhone Fold, iPhone Ultra, or iPhone Duo?

The foldable iPhone was the most rumoured Apple product of the last three years, and almost every pre-launch article called it iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra. Neither was right: Apple named it iPhone Duo, describing it as the largest display of any iPhone — foldable, poseable and durable. If iPhone Fold is the name you searched for, this is the device you meant, and it is the next iPhone to land here.

Malaysia is in the launch wave but later: pre-orders from 16 October at 8pm, on sale from 23 October, starting at RM9,499. That makes it the most expensive iPhone sold here.

1. Announcement week. Demand for the previous generation iPhone stays strong — the new phones are not in anyone's hands yet.
2. Availability week. Thousands receive a new iPhone and list the old one the same weekend. Supply jumps.
